Beach Holiday in a Holiday Home on Denmark’s Largest Island: Zealand

On Zealand, you’ll find magnificent castles, exciting amusement parks, and long, white sandy beaches. Denmark’s largest island is located in the Baltic Sea, close to Sweden, with the Øresund Bridge connecting the two countries.

Zealand captivates all its visitors with fascinating contrasts. Here, lively cities are found near picturesque villages, stunning natural areas such as the fjord landscapes in Skjoldungernes Land National Park, and a wealth of modern attractions.

Denmark’s Capital, Copenhagen, and Charming Coastal Towns

Copenhagen is both Zealand’s and Denmark’s largest city. The capital stretches from the island’s northwest coast across several smaller islands, making it a city truly shaped by the sea. At the heart of the metropolis lies its grand harbor, where the famous Little Mermaid sits on her rock. Copenhagen is a hub for art, culture, and entertainment, so even if your holiday isn’t based in the capital itself, it’s well worth a visit. Discover Christiansborg Palace, world-class museums, the iconic Tivoli amusement park, and concerts of all kinds.

Along the North Zealand coast, charming seaside towns line up one after another. Just about 50 kilometers north of Copenhagen lies Hornbæk, a popular holiday destination with stylish holiday homes and a cozy marina. At the northern tip of Zealand, you’ll find Gilleleje, a former fishing village now known for its idyllic thatched-roof houses and vibrant shopping scene. The neighboring villages Vejby Strand and Tisvildeleje offer scenic coastal retreats. Just southwest of Tisvildeleje, Tisvilde Hegn, one of Denmark’s largest forests, invites you to explore its hiking and cycling trails. The beach at Vejby Strand is accessed via stairways due to the steep coastline, creating a stunning backdrop for sunbathing and swimming.

Further along the coast, the charming town of Liseleje awaits — so special that it even has an asteroid named after it!

Especially Family-Friendly Beaches on Zealand

Zealand boasts many beaches with fine, soft sand, making them perfect for a family holiday in Denmark. The Baltic Sea is calmer than the North Sea, and the beaches here are flat and shallow, so children can splash around safely. Several bathing areas are monitored by lifeguards during the summer, and many of the beaches have received the “Blue Flag” certification.

Child-Friendly beaches on the Danish Riviera

In the northern part of Zealand, you’ll find the Danish Riviera along the shores of Hesseløbukten. Kilometer-long sandy beaches invite you to relax in the sun. The beach in Hornbæk is one of the best for families with children. It offers a kiosk, restrooms, and a large playground. The area also has a grill zone, tables, and benches. The sandy beach is wide and bordered by dunes, and nearby, there are several ice cream stands.

Grønnehave Strand, a child-friendly beach, is located at the narrowest point of the Øresund Strait. Situated next to the marina in Helsingør, it features beach volleyball courts, a playground, restrooms, and a kiosk at the nearby campsite. Visitors can also enjoy the grill area, which has chairs and tables. Grønnehave Strand is perfect for families with dogs, as a section of the beach near the harbor is designated as a dog beach. On the other side of the marina, the beautiful and historically significant Kronborg Castle stands watch over the Øresund Strait.

North of Roskilde Fjord, Liseleje sits along the coast facing the Baltic Sea. The beach here is ideal for kite flying, and in late summer, the wind conditions are typically perfect. There’s an ice cream kiosk and restrooms available. Next to the parking lot at Liseleje Strand, in a shaded forest, lies the creatively designed nature playground Havtyren. In the forest, you can bring out a picnic basket and cool off on hot days. All three beaches on the Danish Riviera we’ve presented here have received the “Blue Flag” certification and are monitored by lifeguards during the bathing season.

The three best beaches for families in Odsherred

Between Sejerøbukten and Isefjorden, the region of Odsherred offers beautiful nature and wonderful beaches, like pearls on a string. Høve Strand, located in the southeast of Sejerøbukten, is one of the most child-friendly beaches in the area. Flanked by sand dunes, it offers nearby restrooms and a kiosk. The wind conditions are perfect for kite flying, and the waves are ideal for surfing. Dogs are also welcome, and in the dog forest at the southern end of the beach, they can even roam off-leash. Like the next two beaches, Høve Strand is Blue Flag certified, and lifeguards are on duty during the summer months.

On the northern coast of Odsherred, the Rørvig beach, with its fine white sand and stretches up to 30 meters wide, invites families to enjoy a relaxing beach holiday. The beach features a kiosk and restrooms, and it offers excellent conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Right by the beach, there are sand dunes with protected forest, and numerous walking trails pass through the natural area. Many fun activities are available both in the water and on land, for both children and adults, even outside the high season.

Another family-friendly beach in Odsherred is Gudmindrup Strand, located in the northeastern part of Sejerøbukten. Here, the water is very shallow, and the sand dunes along the beach provide good protection from the wind. Restrooms are available on-site. Near Gudmindrup Strand, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. Play a round of golf at the Pay&Play course at Odsherred Golf Club, or visit the Sommerland Sjælland amusement park, just a few kilometers away.

Idyllic fishing spots on Zealand

Denmark’s largest island is a paradise for anglers. Fish don’t only bite in the sea; they also thrive in rivers and freshwater lakes. Nekseløbukten and the Sjællands Odde peninsula are great fishing spots for saltwater fish, where you can catch flatfish and sea trout. From May to July, you can also catch hornfish. In the Baltic Sea, you can also head out on a deep-sea fishing trip. Several harbors offer boat tours for guests to go fishing. Be sure to book in advance!

A highlight for fishing enthusiasts and seafood gourmets is the Mackerel Festival in Odsherred. Held every year in August at Sjællands Odde, the festival takes place at the Odden ferry harbor. Here, the Danish mackerel fishing championship is held, and fishing trips and other activities for children are offered. Music, demonstrations of fish smoking and preparation, along with delicious dishes made from freshly caught fish and crabs, create a lively atmosphere on land.

If you’re interested in freshwater fishing on Zealand, there are many rivers and lakes to choose from. In a Put&Take lake, everything is set up for optimal fishing success. Near the small town of Højby, you’ll find Brynshøj Put & Take, where there are good opportunities to catch trout, pike, or carp. Another great tip is Højby Sø, where you’ll find a large population of pike, perch, roach, and bream. For those looking to catch fat carp, a trip to the canals in Lammefjorden is recommended. To fish here, you’ll need to pay a fishing fee and obtain a local fishing permit.
