Great experiences for children in North Jutland
North Jutland is a paradise like no other for kids of all ages. Yet another good reason to select a holiday home in North Jutland. If the weather is good you can visit Røverknolden Nature Playground. Røverknolden has been named the best nature playground in the Nordic region and is located in Rold Forest, which is the second largest continuous forest area in the country. Here all your senses will be activated as you play and interact with nature in new ways through the many fun activities which can be found at the playground. Try playing a piano made of wood, listen as the mole digs its way up to the light from underground, touch the frog and its nubbed skin or smell the yellow fungi that can be found on the forest floor. Experience the story of Thumbelina through play and learning. Perhaps you will come across the robbers on their way to bury treasure they have found as you play or enjoy your packed lunch. If you are lucky, they may invite you to watch a short performance based on a fairy tale.
End the day with a treasure hunt of your own by doing some geocaching in Rold Forest. This involves following a GPS (on your smart phone, for example) and using GPS coordinates to find one of the many treasures that are buried in Rold Forest. This is a fun, educational and slightly challenging activity that the entire family can get involved in. When you find the treasure, write your name in the logbook so that those who find the treasure know who has been here before, and then leave behind a little something that the next person can take with them.
If you would like something a little more fast-paced, then another good activity for kids is Fårup Sommerland. Fårup Sommerland is a paradise for the youngest in your group, but we promise that it will be hours and hours of fun for those who like things to be a little more action packed. A single day in Fårup Sommerland is almost not enough to visit all of the many different areas and to try out all the attractions. Race with the Fårup Sommerland Racing Team, experience an 11-metre free fall and work up the courage to plunge down Falken – the fastest wooden slide in Denmark, with a top speed of 70 km per hour. And if that doesn’t sound fast enough for you, then try your hand at Lynet. This roller coaster goes from 0 to 80 km per hour in just two seconds, and trust us, you can really feel it in your stomach. Fårup Sommerland also has a 4D cinema, a train ride around the entire park and an Aquapark, which combines regular rides with a water park. Here you will find both wild water slides, a wave pool and water playgrounds for the little ones. As mentioned, Fårup Sommerland is for the whole family and has rides for all ages, so a trip to this amusement park is one you won’t regret. It is one of the most popular activities that North Jutland has to offer. There are plenty of good options to have a fun day with all the family.
If you want something a little less high octane but still brimming with activities, then consider a visit to Farm Fun in Ålbæk. Farm Fun is a privately owned park located in a beautiful natural area, which is a mix of beach, forest and fields. Farm Fun first opened its doors to visitors in 1996 and has been a huge hit ever since, especially with young children. Here you can pet different types of farm animals and see goats, donkeys, cows and pigs as well as more exotic birds, ostriches and small critters. Go round with the zoo keeper and meet some of the animals or buy some feed and feed them yourselves. Ride the ponies, have a go on the zip wire, catch some fish, get behind the wheel of a moon car, test your motor skills at the playground on the jungle trail or compete to see who can find their way out of the maze first. There are enough activities for a whole day at Farm Fun!
North Jutland is brimming with nature to be explored!
The natural landscapes around North Jutland are a sight in and of themselves. Here you will find many natural treasures that are absolutely worth a visit. For example visit the long sandbar spit known as Grenen in Skagen where the Skagerrak and the Kattegat meet and stand between the two seas. Swimming is not permitted in the water around Grenen, as the meeting of the two seas and the wind create erratic and dangerous currents. The sheer quantity of water and wind also means that Grenen itself is constantly moving position. It once faced towards the north, but if you look at your compass, you will see that today it is facing east.
If you want to combine an active holiday with scenic nature, then Thy National Park is the place for you. The national park is a broad belt, which stretches across the west coast of North Jutland and abounds with many hiking and cycling trails. Explore the unique natural landscape, which has sprung up from the subsoil created during the last ice age, or hunt for the many animals that live in the area and see how many you can spot. Thy National Park is also home to many lakes which are well suited for fishing. So if you have a keen angler in the family, they can fish while the rest of you have a go at the fun orientation run in Vilsbøl Plantage or visit some of the many attractions which can be found in the vicinity of this expansive nature area. You can also spend the night in the park under the starry sky.
North of the fjord and a little south of Blokhus is where you will find Fosdalen. Fosdalen is a spring and part of Denmark’s so-called Nature Canon. It is home to many nice viewpoints, where you can appreciate great views of Denmark’s longest inland slope, the Lien, and the North Sea. It is one of North Jutland’s most visited excursion sites. At the bottom of the gorge, the Vor Frue spring runs all year round at different strengths, bringing rain water down from the upper part of the valley and out into the sea from the largest coastal slope in Denmark. Fosdalen is a peaceful and quiet place with a good network of trails and a nature centre with exhibitions about the area.
There are several fantastic viewing points in North Jutland. Both the east and west coasts are home to many nice places where you can be alone with your thoughts as you contemplate the view. For example, visit the Svinkløv Dune Plantation (Klitplantage) on the west coast and enjoy an excellent view over the Jammerbugten Bay. In Hjørring you can visit Bellevue, which at 69 metres above sea level makes for a great place to look out over the Hjørring Mountains. On the east coast you will find Dronninglund Forest (Storskov), which is home to the two highest points in North Jutland. Another good suggestion is to visit Rold Forest and the Rebild Hills, where you will find yourself surrounded by a beautiful and hilly ice-age landscape.
Take a walk on the beach
North Jutland is home to some of the best beaches in Denmark, where you can enjoy some really gorgeous sunsets. The east coast has many child-friendly beaches with calm and shallow waters, which enjoy plenty of shelter due to the way Jutland curves. The beach at Ålbæk is located between Frederikshavn and Skagen. Ålbæk Strand is several kilometres long and has beautiful white sands, tranquil waters and Blue Flag status for its top-quality waters. It is the perfect beach for a family trip to the seaside.
The crashing waves of the North Sea rage against the coast, and with such wild weather, you will find that these beaches are often best left to adept and experienced swimmers. If you are a mixed crowd, it will however be possible to find beaches that meet everybody’s needs. One such beach is Blokhus Strand which is child-friendly but also well suited for windsurfing and kitesurfing. You are allowed to take your car onto the white sandy beach. It is also possible to buy fresh fish here all year round.
Denmark’s only palm beach is also located in North Jutland. Palmestranden is located in Frederikshavn and simply radiates an exotic and almost tropical holiday atmosphere. Real palm trees stand atop the white sand in copious numbers. In winter they are stored in greenhouses, but from May each year, they are once more placed on the beach. Play beach volleyball, enjoy an ice cream under the shade of the palm trees or build sand castles on the wide, white sandy beach. Palemstranden is absolutely worth a visit, and it is a place you can visit without any worry since you can find lifeguards from Trygfonden here every summer.
Beautiful Skagen is one of North Jutland’s gems
The coastline which surrounds North Jutland makes its presence particularly felt in the small towns located nearby to the holiday homes we rent out. Here you will find beaches brimming with happy holidaymakers and restaurants which serve delicious fresh fish brought in on the cutters each day. You will see the restaurants in full swing as you stroll through the towns, which simply emanate a maritime atmosphere. One place which Danes hold very close to their hearts is Skagen. Its quintessential yellow houses, the views of the North Sea and its distinctive dialect are for many the very essence of a holiday in North Jutland.
If you find yourself at the tip of North Jutland, the Art Museums of Skagen are great places to visit. As the name suggests, there is not one but three different museums, so you can be sure to experience new exhibitions and tours no matter whether this is your first, second or third visit. The exhibitions focus primarily on the famous Skagen Painters, who were active from the end of the 19th century. Visit the home of Anna and Michael Ancher, take a look at Krøyer’s famous portrait paintings and send the youngest in your party off on a picture hunt while you enjoy the many artworks on display. A tour for up to 25 people usually takes approx. 45 minutes. The culinary offerings here are also top notch.
Skagen is home to Bolcheriet, where you can buy and taste sweets and see first hand how they are made. The sweet makers twist, colour and roll the warm liquid before your eyes, to the delight and wonderment of kids and adults. At Bolcheriet you can buy sweets in many different flavours, have a go at making your own lollipop or buy a sweet souvenir to take home with you.
Visit the biggest city in North Jutland – Aalborg.
A holiday home in North Jutland means proximity to Aalborg. Stroll along the city’s old streets, and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere which attracts people from all across the region. The city’s pedestrian street network is brimming with shops and cafés, which are all housed in the old buildings that make up the oldest part of Aalborg. If you go up to the top of the Salling Department Store to Salling Rooftop, you will enjoy beautiful views over Aalborg and its charming old streets, which twist and snake behind the busy pedestrian streets. The winding streets are nice and quiet and filled with colourful houses and beautiful flowers. Budolfi Church towers proudly in the heart of the city. This beautiful cathedral fills the streets with a sweet melody when the bell rings and it can be heard all around Aalborg on a calm day. Below the church is a new area with a restaurant, benches for weary legs and a lovers’ lane, where you can take a stroll with your better half.
Aalborg Waterfront is one of the city’s hallmarks, and it is simply buzzing with life. This district is home to a part of the city’s university as well as the Utzon Centre, the harbour baths and some leafy parks. If you continue to walk along the water past the red Culture Bridge (Kulturbro), which connects Nørresundby and Aalborg by train, you will arrive at the city’s marina and street food area. Continue along even farther, and you will eventually reach a large and new recreation area by the name of Vestre Fjordpark. Here you can take a dip in the open-air baths, do some sunbathing, have a go at one of the obstacle courses and enjoy the view over Egholm, which is a tiny island in the Limfjord. Over on the island, Restaurant Kronborg serves patty shells and other delicious Danish recipes to those who take the short ferry ride across.
Aalborg has many exciting sights. Visit the city’s zoo, which is open 363 days a year, and say hello to many of the animals who live there. If it’s culture and art you are looking for, you can visit either Kunsten Museum of Modern Art, which houses a huge collection of modern visual art, or you can go to Kunsthal NORD, which is a gallery for contemporary art in an old CHP plant in the centre of Aalborg. Admission is free for everyone. Another cultural activity you can do is to head across the fjord to Nørresundby and continue north to Lindholm Høje. Lindholm Høje is home to more than 682 graves from the days of the Vikings and a beautiful area with an associated museum, where you can get a glimpse into the lives of those who once lived in the area.
The best sights and attractions in North Jutland
When it comes to family holidays, it can be difficult to keep everyone happy when deciding what activities to do. Fortunately this is not so much of a problem when you spend your vacation in a holiday home in North Jutland, as the area is brimming with great places to visit – from amusements and museums to gastronomy and nature.
Dive below the surface of the water and discover the hidden side of North Jutland at the North Sea Oceanarium. Dive below the surface and discover a world of life that we rarely have the chance to appreciate up close. The aquarium is the largest in Northern Europe, and it is built around seven destinations which characterise the different areas you can find in the North Sea. All in all, the destinations cover 81 different animal species and give you a good idea of the rich and varied life that populates the North Sea. Among other things, you can meet Denmark’s cutest predator – the seal – which you can see up close in a large outdoor pool with a glass tunnel at the bottom. Watch as the seals frolic about in the water, play with each other and feast on some super tasty fish. Check feeding times on the website so you can be sure to get the most out of your visit!
If land animals are more your thing then Lille Vildmose Centre may just be the place for you. Lille Vildmose is a raised bog and home to some of Denmark’s oldest nature. The bog is also home to many different animals and Nordic beasts, which can be difficult to come across out in the wild. The museum has four interactive exhibits about life in the bog, its nature and the animals that live here. Special holiday activities take place here throughout the year. At Easter you can go hiking, and in the summer you can have a go at crab fishing, take a guided tour, hunt and bake over an open fire, while in the autumn many events are held which focus on the foods of the forest, cooking over an open fire, how nature is changing and animals in heat. In addition to the museum, you can also go for a walk in the park and play in the nature playground, where you may even be lucky enough to meet the troll Lille Vildma, who will happily tell you about the bog and its history.
Music festivals
North Jutland also has plenty to offer in terms of culture. Visit some of the many art workshops and galleries which can be found around the region’s towns, and experience local art or have a chat with the artists themselves. All throughout the summer you can enjoy the sounds of the many music festivals held in the area. Nibe, Skagen, Løkken and Aalborg are just some of the towns and cities where people gather to enjoy some great music and cold drinks.
Nibe Festival is the largest music festival in North Jutland, and it is held every year on the first week of July. Many different bands play at the festival’s five stages, with a total of around 85 artists performing at the festival each year, primarily within the genres of rock and pop. The majority of the artists are Danish, and you will find both established and up-and-coming acts, as well as a few foreign names, which add a different element to the festival experience. The festival relies on the work of volunteers, and each year, the festival donates its profits to the culture scene in North Jutland.
There is even a festival which takes place at the very tip of North Jutland. The Skagen Festival is the oldest music festival in Denmark and was first held back in 1971. The first edition of the festival was held at the villa of Danish painter Laurits Tuxen, and the performing artists were primarily Danish and Norwegian folk musicians. The festival quicky outgrew its venue and soon moved across to the town’s badminton and tennis halls. Today the festival is still held in civic premises but has also spilled out into tents along the harbour, where artists also play. The festival is held in the first weekend of July and is an international folk music festival which showcases how folk music has developed over the years. Genres such as folk, folk/rock, jazz, blues and folk singing are all represented at the festival.
If you are heading to Løkken for your holiday, then consider checking out the Løkken Koncert. The Løkken Koncert has been held on a Saturday in July every year since 1985. The tradition started with the summer parties and concerts that were held at the Løkken Stadium by the non-profit organisation Muskelsvindfonden in collaboration with the local sports association GVL. When Løkken Hallen was built in 1972, it hosted many parties and concerts featuring both British and Danish performers. Today these concerts are held under the name Løkken Koncert, and they are a huge success with up to 11,000 in attendance. The musical style at the Løkken Koncert is traditional and some of the names to grace its stage over the years have included Kim Larsen, Lars Lilholt Band, Johnny Madsen, Big Fat Snake and TV·2.
In Aalborg, many different festivals are held throughout the summer. Two of the most popular are Skovrock and Fredgasfest which is held in Karolinelund. Skovrock is organised by the town’s iconic Skråen venue at the Skovdalen amphitheatre, right in the heart of Aalborg. There is space here for 5500 spectators, who are all guaranteed a good view of the stage, and the vibe is amazing at the numerous concerts which take place during the whole summer period. Fredagsfest in Karolinelund is a similar concept. A concert is held every Friday in July and August at the city’s old amusement park with tickets sold at the door. It is also possible to purchase tickets in advance.
Good tips for free experiences with the family in North Jutland
One of the reasons why a holiday home in North Jutland is so popular in Denmark among both Danes and tourists, who come from far and wide, is that North Jutland is the perfect setting for a great holiday experience. Here you will find activities for all ages no matter what kind of holiday you prefer.
North Jutland is simply brimming with things you can do for free. For example, go off and explore some of the region’s landmarks, including Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. This lighthouse is easy to get to and there is good parking close to the building itself. Cross the tall sandbanks and enjoy the view of the white lighthouse, with its red roof and the crashing waves of the North Sea in the background. The lighthouse became world famous in 2019 when it was moved 70 metres inland to keep it from collapsing into the water because of sand drift. The lighthouse makes for a good excuse to share what you know with the kids about Denmark’s maritime history or for granddad to share a childhood memory or two of his own experiences in this part of the country.
Not far from Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is the Bulbjerg Bird Cliff (Bulbjerg Fuglefjeld). Bulbjerg was originally an island surrounded by the North Sea, which once covered the area that we know today as Thy. The Vikings used the island to find their way out to the North Sea, but around the year 1100, the area was buried by sand, giving rise to the Limfjord we know today. Bulbjerg is Jutland’s only cliff and often called the Shoulder of Jutland. If you happen to visit on a day with clear weather, you will be able to see all the way to Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse and the small town of Hanstholm from the top of the cliff, which towers 47 metres above sea level. Plus you can also enjoy the sight of the many birds that travel to the cliff to breed. Some of the species you might be able to spot will include kittiwakes, gannets, jays, puffins and mallards.
Another unique, very typical and free experience you can enjoy in North Jutland is Råbjerg Mile. This impressive migrating coastal dune is a distinctive dune landscape with metre-tall dunes, A whole world of interesting plants lays hidden at the edge of the migrating dune, not to mention animals that inhabit the wetlands left behind in the wake of the migrating dune. Råbjerg Mile is often referred to as Denmark’s desert, and on a still day, you can hear the sand whistle as it flies across the dune. The dune travels about 15 metres each year, and in 100 to 200 years, it is estimated that the entire stretch from the beginning of the dune to Skagen will be covered in sand. In the centre of the dune is the Sand-Covered Church (Den Tilsandede Kirke), which has been closed for use since 1795 because sand has blocked the road to the church. Each summer the church attracts many tourists who want to visit this icon of the dune and climb the old church tower, which offers a great view over the migrating dune and the wider dune landscape.
