Go on holiday to a summer house on scenic Fanø

What makes Fanø so fantastic is that this little island off the west coast of South Jutland offers the perfect setting to relax and unwind, but also to focus on more fun and exciting activities during your holiday. You can reach Fanø by the Fanø Ferry Line from Esbjerg, which docks at the port of Nordby. The ferry makes regular crossings, so you don’t need to worry about having to adapt your plans to the ferry timetable.

Fanø is a real natural gem located in the Wadden Sea National Park. The Wadden Sea is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and it is an area that you simply must experience if you want to see Denmark from one of the country’s most beautiful sides. The island is optimal for family holidays because its calm and relaxed atmosphere is great for spending real quality time together, while the island’s landscapes and nature offer many different activities to enjoy together. Below you can read more about the different things to do on the island.

Holiday homes on Fanø for larger families

If you want to holiday in a summer house together with one or more other families or if you are looking to assemble the whole friend group together, then our holiday homes on Fanø are a great choice. Here at VillaVilla, we have holiday homes on Fanø for 16 and 18 people. The summer houses have more or less the same layout, one is just able to accommodate slightly more people than the other.

Both of the holiday homes that we rent out on Fanø are divided up into different bedroom areas. This makes it easier for multiple people to gather together under one roof, as you will have the option to retreat back into your own little space when you want to nap or read without being disturbed by the others. The holiday homes each have three different sleeping areas with between two and three bedrooms in each one. Plus the holiday homes also have a loft with mattresses, which can sleep four people. The lofts are usually a hit among younger guests, as they can enjoy a little bit of independence in their very own adult-free zone.

Both holiday homes are spacious, bright and located on a large natural plot, where you will find ample space for the kids to run around and burn off lots of energy. Enjoy the sun on the terrace as you lounge about in comfortable garden furniture with a cold drink while the kids play in the sandbox and swing set or enjoy a game of football on the lawn. Holiday Home No. 179 also has an outdoor trampoline. You will have no trouble keeping an eye on the kids as they whiz around while you enjoy a relaxed chat.

Facilities in the holiday homes on Fanø

There is a wealth of entertainment waiting for you in our summer houses on Fanø. First of all, we have made sure that you will be able to enjoy the water no matter the weather outside. If the weather is miserable or you simply don’t feel like going to the beach – which is under a kilometre away – then you can enjoy the 25 m2 swimming pool in the holiday home’s pool area instead. Here you will also find an exquisite whirlpool and a sauna, where you can pamper yourself with a few hours of true well-being. The sauna is also great for getting some heat back in your bones after a walk on the beach or amber hunting in the winter months. There is room for a small group.

Another thing on offer in this holiday home is the activity room. The activity room is a large space where hours upon hours of fun and games await. Here you will find table football, table tennis, darts, billiards and a games console. Just remember to bring your own games for the latter. The activity room is the perfect place to spend a grey-weather day or to decide whose job it will be to clear up after dinner. Everyone in the family can try their hand at the games you will find here, and if you feel dare, you can even hold a family tournament to see who will be crowned holiday champion at the end of your trip!

When heading off to a holiday house, it is important to have the entire family with you. That’s why guests are permitted to bring up to two pets with them when staying at our holiday homes on Fanø. However keep in mind that you need to check pet restrictions in certain areas of the island, especially due to the natural wildlife in the area. There is a special dog forest in Fanø Plantation, where your four-legged friends will always be welcome to run free. If you need to bring more than two pets, you can always contact us. We will pass your request on to the homeowner.

Good experiences in nature for all the family

As mentioned, Fanø is located in the middle of the Wadden Sea. If you have chosen a holiday home break because you want to enjoy long walks in nature and relax in the fresh air, then you could hardly pick a better spot.

The Wadden Sea National Park is reason enough to visit this small island in and of itself, and the tides phenomenon you can see here is simply fantastic. What’s more, this small and peaceful island is also a great place to appreciate the rich flora and fauna of the national park. The Wadden Sea is the largest unbroken system of intertidal sands in Europe and a favourite breeding ground among water birds. The area around Fanø is transformed into their own domain, where migratory birds can relax, find food and breed. One of the best places on Fanø from where to watch the birds is Sønderho. It is important that you bring your binoculars since you are not allowed to get up close to the birds. This is so as to spare them from human interference. Instead you can observe and appreciate them from a distance.

Fanø is also home to large colonies of seals. During low tide, and especially on the southern part of the island, you will be able to spot large colonies of grey and harbour seals. These seals are very curious, and they may come up close to you. These seals have been protected from hunting and so do not consider humans as dangerous. If you are interested you will have the option to go on a guided seal safari when you are on Fanø. This is a fun experience for the whole family!

You can also go hunting for amber on Fanø. These chunks of fossilised, golden tree resin wash up on the south west coast of Fanø, and so your best chances of finding them on the beach will be following a period with big waves. If you are keen on the idea of an amber hunt, the best time to do this is when the weather is cold, i.e. in the winter. Amber floats best when the water is cold, which means it is more likely to wash up on the beach in the winter months. So if the winds have been blowing in your favour, throw on your winter coat and head out to see what you can find. The whole family can join in. An expert tip is to head wherever you see large flocks of seagulls. They gather in places where the sea has washed up mussels, plants and possibly amber as well!
