Blåvand is a lively holiday town on Denmark’s westernmost point, with charming and family-friendly atmosphere, countless shops and lots of great places to eat, with outdoor dining options in the summer. In Blåvand you can combine quality family time with fresh sea air and that traditional holiday home feeling. Green forests, white dunes and rich wildlife make the area just fantastic for a tranquil family holiday with child-friendly beaches and lots of activities to be enjoyed both in the sunshine and in the pouring rain.

With Blåvand as your base, you can spend your days by the North Sea or by visiting some of the bigger towns located in the vicinity. Esbjerg, Varde and Ribe are all within driving distance and have lots of sights that are worth a visit. Visit Esbjerg, the youngest town in Denmark, one day and then go to Ribe, the oldest town, the next day, and see how Denmark has changed over the years both in terms of its architecture and its culture.

There are various options in Blåvand where you can buy groceries if you prefer to eat and relax at the holiday home you have rented. There is a Meny supermarket in the centre of town, or alternatively you can go to Blåvand Kro where there is a Spar. The shops in Blåvand are open all year round and close only on 25 December and on the first of January.

A gastronomic experience in Blåvand

Blåvand has lots of good shopping options, which are open year round. In the town, you will also find eateries and cafés for all the family where you can find fresh fish and taste other local delicacies. Most places have options for outdoor dining. If you want to sample one of the best and most highly regarded restaurants in the area, then pay a visit to Ho Kro. Ho Kro is located amidst white half-timbered houses in the middle of the small town of Ho and serves gourmet food with a personal and local touch. Enjoy your dinner in the cosy inn, which has an atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home.

If you want something lighter, then why not enjoy a cold drink at one of Blåvand’s nice cafés or pubs? For example, visit the Slainte Irish Pub, where you can order from an extensive beer menu, or enjoy a cold beer in the sunshine as you watch the world go by in the centre of Blåvand.

 

Culture and art en masse

The area around Blåvand is brimming with interesting cultural experiences. See how life by the North Sea in a small community is interpreted and retold through various different art forms and crafts. In Blåvand you can visit a candle factory, a glassworks, a ceramics workshop, an amber grinder, a mini-zoo and many different and interesting museums. You can also try your hand at making sweets. There are lots of things to do and hours of fun await!

The city’s local amber grinder not only makes beautiful jewellery out of the gorgeous petrified resin which can be found on the local beach. Throughout the summer, they also organise excursions so you can go out and hunt for amber on the beaches located in the vicinity of Blåvand. If you don’t want to go on one of the trips which are planned in advance or if they don’t suit your schedule, you can go off on your own instead. There are lots of places where you can find amber around Blåvand, but your best chance at finding these small golden lumps is probably at the beach by the Blåvandshuk headland and by Blåvand Lighthouse.

As mentioned, Blåvand also has a mini-zoo. Blåvand Zoo is home to more than 400 animals and 80 different species. These include well-known animals like rabbits, ponies, calves and goats, which you can pet on your visit, but also more uncommon beasts of the wild such as lions and red kangaroos. Blåvand Zoo is the only place in Denmark where you can see both of these species.

 

Remember the bike when you go to Blåvand

It is a really good idea to bring your bike with you if you are going on holiday around Blåvand. There is a large network of cycle paths in the holiday home areas, which take you around and past many beautiful spots typical of the coastal area here in south-west Jutland. The area around Blåvand is simply a paradise for cyclists, with routes that are suited for both beginners and seasoned mountain bike pros. Cycling here is also good for family excursions at a slow pace, as there are good options available that don’t require cycling in traffic. If you are a group of friends who like to go out for long rides at high speeds then you will find good options for that as well. For example, try cycling from Blåvand to Henne Kirkeby via Vejers and Grærup and then back home to Blåvand again. This route will take you along one of the longest hills in West Jutland, so expect sore legs when you are finished with your ride.

 

Top attractions near Blåvand

The Fisheries and Maritime Museum (Fiskeri- og Søfartsmuseet) in Esbjerg gives you the chance to get up close and personal with seals, the birds of the Wadden Sea and the different fish that can be found in Danish waters, especially around the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. Check out the museum’s exhibitions and learn all about life as a fisherman and what this entailed. Visit the Wadden Sea and World Oceans exhibition and see what the harbours, fishing villages and shipyards looked like before the Second World War. You can also help feed the seals, which live in the newly renovated Sealarium. Feeding takes place every day at 11 and 14:30.

Using prehistoric finds and local craft, Blåvandshuk Regional Museum tells the history of the region from antiquity right through to the year 1900. The museum also covers the West Coast during the Second World War, with particular focus on the Oksbøl Refugee Camp. The story is told in part through a film, which is shown in both German and Danish. At the Blåvand Lifeboat Museum (Redningsbådsmuseum), you can read more about the history of the lifeboat service and view their equipment.

The world-famous amusement park Legoland is about 75 km away from Blåvand and can be reached by car in around an hour. Here, you can spend an entire day enjoying the many rides, dive into the virtual world of Atlantis, watch films in the 4D theatre and more. The park is especially well known for its Mini Land where everything is built out of millions of Lego bricks. A visit to Legoland is an all-day activity so prepare to unleash your inner child and enjoy Denmark’s renowned amusement park.

 

Experience the beauty of nature around Blåvand

Blåvand is surrounded by magnificent nature in the form of large heathland and forest areas. There are many walking and cycling routes that take you around the fantastic terrain. If you are lucky you may even spot some vipers, roe deer or red deer. The trails require a certain level of physical fitness, and the terrain can be difficult to traverse for some people.

If you would like to go out on a longer trip out in nature, then Børsmose and Børsmose Strand are absolutely to be recommended. Farmers and fishermen have lived in the area for centuries, and there are great views over the roaring North Sea from the high dunes.

There are many marked hiking trails around the area by Blåvand. You will find wonderful options of 5, 10 and 15 km in length. Take a short walk around Lake Kvie Sø or follow one of the marked trails in Bordrup Plantage. All of these routes are less than 5 km. If you would like to walk a bit more than that, head to Kærgård Plantation and enjoy a walk along the width of Lake Karlsgårde. If you extend your walk through the fields in the area, then you will rack up a total of 11 km. A route which goes by the name of Drivvejen goes the whole way from Thyborøn to Germany. Walk along as much of the route as you like and cast your mind back to the olden days when folk would drive cattle down from West Jutland into the Southern Jutland region as well as into Germany.

It is also worth noting that there are good places to do some geocaching in Blåvand in the area around the town and in the Wadden Sea area. Hunt through natural landscapes and along the many trails and get a real sense for the culture, history and natural beauty of the region as you go. Geocaching is a fun activity for the whole family and all you need is a device with GPS in order to take part. Remember also to bring along something you can leave behind as a little prize for the next participant!

 

Active holiday with water sports

Be sure to also take a walk along the nice white sandy beaches, by the roaring North Sea and down the Blåvandshuk headland, where you can still spot concrete bunkers from the Second World War. This is also a good place to watch people doing water sports and making the most of the wild and powerful waves of the North Sea. Windsurfing is particularly popular on the west coast, and even if the waves may look very rough, they are also quite good for beginners who want to try their hand at the sport perhaps for the very first time. If you would like a professional introduction to windsurfing, then you can travel 45 minutes north to Bork Harbour where beginners courses are offered. Other fun sports that can be enjoyed on the North Sea include kitesurfing and paddleboarding.
